I didn't see a forum specifically for map questions...hope it's ok to post here.
1. I used Visio to create a background for my map. Then, I imported the background into Atlas. Next, I wanted to adjust the texture of the background, so I tried to change it to "Blue 2" texture. Well, when I try to add texture, my custom background disappears and a block of texture appears instead. Is there a way to build a custom background and still use the texture feature in Atlas?
2. The reason I had to use Visio to build my background is because I don't see a way to draw a line on a map in Atlas UNLESS it's connected to an object. Is it possible to draw lines on a map without connecting them to anything? I just want a basic 4 square grid for more map, which means I need to draw one vertical line and one horizontal line. Can't see a way to do that though.
Thanks!
I believe the texture and custom background can not be combined. Create what you want in visio and then add your objects on top of it.
I'm not sure what how a grid gets you more map but you can make your maps extremely large. From my experience the drawing tools are pretty weak. I just use the background element to create anything I want and just use atlas to provide status
In the case of Network Atlas Textures can not be used in conjunction with background images. There's no concept of image layering in Network Atlas that would be required for this level of functionality. You are also correct that you have no free draw ability in Network Atlas like you'd find in Microsoft Paint or other similar programs. I would recommend making any necessary changes to the background image using Microsoft Paint, Snag-it Editor, Photoshop, or GIMP to name a few possible image editing solutions.
Alternatively in order to accomplish your 4 square grid you could use the grid option in Network Atlas. The example below shows a custom grid spacing of 900 accomplishing a basic 4 square grid.
