New APM

Trying to sort out a licence monitor quantity upgrade at work (someone specified 50 when we need far more than that!) due to some upcoming changes. I see that APM5.0 introduces server hardware functionality similar to that of HP/Compaq Insight Mangler and this is something I would like to include when I get the update and upgrade done.

My question is, how many monitors of the licence does monitoring the hardware of an HP Proliant server take up? I could do with rough numbers to add into my calculations and justifications to management of what size of licence I require.

Also, on a slightly related note, am I right in thinking if I upgrade the size of my NPM licence (250 to 500 element) I also need to upgrade my NCM licence to the same number of elements?

Thanks!

Only number of Nodes and Components are licensed in APM/SAM. Hardware Health monitoring does not count against the license so you can monitor as many hardware sensors as you want on as many nodes as you have licensed.

Martin is correct. Hardware Monitoring in SAM 5.0 does not count against your component monitor licenses. You receive this functionality as part of the node license. Only one node license per-server is required.

To your NPM/NCM license question, these two license do not have to be the same. It's very common for customers to have dissimilar license sizes. For example, an NPM SL2000 license, and a NCM DL500 license. The only licenses that are tied together are NPM and NTA.

      Thanks guys!

Just a quick question on the terminology though... You're now referring to both Nodes and Components as licenced elements. Has the licencing model changed in APM 5 (and am I right in thinking APM is becoming SAM with this major version upgrade)?

I'm not sure if I've missed an announcement somewhere; probably through being on leave at some point. I have to admit that the main SolarWinds website is a little confusing now with references to both Application Monitoring and Server Monitoring which appear to be different products, but also have the same licence codes and seem to share many of the same pages!

      Thanks again for your help.

APM will be renamed in the next release currently in release candidate. The new name will be Server & Application Monitor (SAM). Licensing has not changed for the product. It's still licensed on the highest number of Component Monitors, Nodes, or Volumes. For example, an AL300 license provides you 300 Component Monitor, 300 Node, and 300 volume licenses. If you were to monitor 200 component monitors, 100 nodes, and 150 volumes you'd still be under your 300 license count as the highest number of the three is the 200 component monitors. Nodes and volume licenses are also additive with other modules. For example, if you had a SAM AL300 and a NPM SL500 you would be licensed for 800 nodes and 800 volumes, but only 300 SAM/APM component monitors and 500 NPM interfaces. Is that clear as mud? :)

Sorry for the delay in replying... Managed to sneak away for a long weekend somewhere else! :)

I think i get it now. So in my situation, we currently have NPM250 and I'm looking at getting either APM1500 or the unlimited version if I can persuade management.

Therefore, I would be able to monitor:

          • 1750 (or an unlimited number if I get that licence) nodes and volumes
          • 1500 (or an unlimited number if I get that licence) APM monitors
          • 250 interfaces?
