Without a screenshot it's hard to know precisely what you're seeing since I'm unable to replicate this behavior in my environment
What you may be noticing is the node name sort for application templates
Where here we can see the "nodes" are unsorted. This is because this information is actually a different field entirely. To sort on application template with node name make the following adjustments to the All Application resource.
Add the "Node Name" to level 2 sorting and the templates will be sorted by application template and then by node name.

I don't like a two level drill down that could only hold one entity but I do want to sort it on node name. Also, on the old version it does sort based off node name. When it is already grouped by Application Template, why would one want to sort based off template name? Can node name sort be added without making it another expand to click?
Below is a screenshot from my 4.2 server showing the same behavior as 5.0 so I don't believe this is a regression. The only way I'm aware to double sort on Application Name and Node Name is the method I described above. For now I'll log this as a bug.
Here is mine that is sorted. Maybe yours is sorting by status then node name.
