I took some time to install the latest beta of SAM in our testing environment and try out the updated hardware monitoring. Overall I'd say the results are very positive, but I have a couple questions.
My testing environment (well, Corporate network) consists of four Dell R610's, 1 Dell R510, and a single HP ProLiant DL385 G1 from the dark ages. All Dell servers are running Windows 2008 R2 (either Core or Standard) and the HP was recently rebuilt with Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise. All were discovered by SAM through SNMP. The Dell servers each have OM6.5 and the ProLiant had everything installed that was recommended by the ProLiant Support Pack 8.50 before it was put into service.
Each Dell server's hardware was fully recognized and is monitored by SAM. I see CPU, Intrusion, Memory, Array, Battery, Disk, Temperature, Power Supply, and Fan nodes. After some spot testing I have found the values reported to be accurate.
No hardware info is showing up for the HP ProLiant server, making me think I'm missing something obvious that I need to install. We only have this one ProLiant and there is not a full install of HP SIM.
Question 1 -- I have all hosts monitored by SNMP and not WMI. Is that what's recommended to get the most out of hardware health monitoring? (That's my guess.)
Question 2 -- What do I need to install on our HP ProLiant to get hardware health monitoring working? I have not set up SIM in the past and I'm reading it uses a management server with a SQL database, which is a little much considering I only have one of these. Is there something lighter I can install?
Hardware monitoring by SAM is achieved by polling nodes and utilizing the Hardware Monitoring Agent software provided by the hardware manufacturer. Currently, SAM 5.0 supports monitoring hardware from VMWare hosts, Hewlett-Packard (HP) ProLiant, Dell PowerEdge, and the IBM X-Series.
Hardware Monitoring Agent software can be found using the links below:

Oops. Almost forgot question 1. Yes SNMP is more complete so I imagine you'll see more hardware categories if you're monitoring via SNMP than WMI. I still encourage you to try WMI and let us know what information you're not seeing that you should.
Hi,
For monitoring HP kit if you head to www.hp.com and search for your model of server under support and browse the server OS your using you need to download and install the Proliant Support Pack if you haven't already.
I've just installed the RC for SAM just to test it out ahead of an upgrade very soon and having the HP polling is brilliant! Now if I can only fathom out how to read C instead of F I'd be sorted :)

SAM 5.0 is no longer in release candidate status. It was officially released last week. I would recommend reading over the following blog posting which discusses the official release as well as outlines how to change from Fahrenheit to Celsius.
