I am not sure this was already covered, but..
After installing the RC4 candidate, I am trying to edit a couple of server nodes. Now that we can, in theory, monitor a server with WMI and ICMP, instead of just ICMP or ICMP/SNMP, I watned to test that on a few servers.
I goto the node in question, click on Edit Node/Edit Properties (tried from both the node page and from Settings/Manage Nodes), and the polling options are NOT SELECTABLE.
Why am I not able to select a different method?
Am I missing something here? Is there a setting somewhere I need to enable to be able to change the poling method a single node?
TIA.
Orion NPM 10.2 does not support switching existing node type from SNMP to WMI and vice versa, because NPM 10.2 is not able to poll interfaces over WMI. This option was disabled on Web Console.
You can try to add a new node as WMI to test this new feature.
Ok - I can understand needing to make restrictions on switching from SNMP to WMI, since WMI cant monitor interfaces, etc.. BUT -
There is NO warnings/notice or other indication of WHY the WMI and ICMP option is grey'd out (Again, see my screenshot above)
Also - what I find even more frustrating - I can not change the polling method to ONLY ICMP or just disable monitoring at all.
I just talked wtih Francois, and explained that to me, there should be some logic somewhere that if we are going to be restricted from enabling WMI on a node - simply DO NOT show the option, or make the dialog box a bit bigger, and explain why the option isnt availible?
As for not being able to pick "No Status: External Node" or "Status Only : ICMP" - I am confused why those options are not availible at all.
Thanks!
What is the recommended solution then if I need to change the polling engine? Am I going to have to delete the nodes and then re-add them? If so, won't I lose my historical data for those nodes?
Thanks
just use Orion Web Site -> Settings -> Manage Nodes -> Select nodes you want to re-assign and in drop down [More actions] select "Change Polling Engine".
Regards
But you have only one engine, right? In that case it's option hidden.
Correct, we only have the one SolarWinds server. So, do I have any option other than deleting the node and choosing ICMP at this point?
Thanks!
ah, I misunderstood your problem. I've read change engine ..... sorry my bad. You want to change non-ICMP node to ICMP ( or between technologies). That's not possible so far.
The only safe option is the one you wrote already. Delete node and add it back.
(of course there's dirty way to do that directly in database, but that's not easy and can have some side-effects)
Fair enough then. I could have sworn we could do this prior to v10.2 though.
Thanks for the help!
I think you are correct, sir - prior to v10.2, we COULD change the polling type - at least from SNMP to ICMP Only.
