Hello everyone,
I was wondering what the best practice would be about installing NPM, ISM, EOC and NTA.
I have read the documentation that Solarwinds offers in its website and what I understand is to install EOC in a central location and install the rest in the client's network.
However, I am not sure how to allocate resources to support this. For instance, what would be the requirements for the SQL database in a separate box? How much traffic should I expect between these servers and EOC across my WAN connection? What are the requirements of the SQL database for EOC?
For what I have read, I know that the database ran by EOC aggregates the SQL database ran by NPM, ISM and NTA. Does this means that the EOC database requires as much space as the rest of the Orion severs together?
I hope anyone can shine some light on this! :)
Bandwidth requirements for EOC
The KB article Orion EOC typical bandwidth requirements discusses this topic.
Typical WAN traffic: EOC's outbound WAN traffic is about 2/3rds of its inbound WAN traffic.
Typical SQL traffic: EOC's outbound SQL server traffic is the same as its inbound WAN traffic.
SQL database disk size for EOC
You need as much SQL database disk space as necessary to store the data collected from your SolarWinds servers in a single polling cycle. SolarWinds EOC does not store historical data.* Old data is overwritten as soon as new data is available.
*If you want to browse historical data, log on to the relevant server and browse it there.
Hi Roger,
Thanks very much for this...
I will work on this based on that information.
You're welcome.
One configuration you should consider is installing EOC and MS SQL on the same server. That would save on the LAN bandwidth that would otherwise be used by the EOC <-> SQL communications.
