Did not receive VTY entry prompt from HP

Hi

I am new to Cattools

I am trying to backup configuration on my HP ProCurve switchs (mainly 2510 and 2626)

I got "Did not receive VTY entry prompt from HP" when trying to do Device.Backup.Running.Config.

The switch is default configured with no password.

  • HI chrsm-

    I checked our support logs and found a similar issue to yours. I don't know if this applies to your situation, but clicking Telnet seems to fix the issue when CatTools hasn't connected in a while.

    Barring that, you can open a support ticket. Here's what to prepare to speed the support process:

    1. Add a "Device.ConnectivityTest.Login" Activity to CatTools.
    2. Add 'OHCBC2_SW2' to the 'Devices' tab of this Activity.
    3. On the 'Options' tab, check both boxes.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Delete everything in \program files\CatTools3\Debug\.
    6. Click "File -> Enable capture mode" to enable it.
    7. Run the "Device.ConnectivityTest.Login" Activity.
    8. Zip up the contents of "\program files\CatTools3\Debug\".
    9. When you open a support ticket, you can upload these files.

    Let me know if that works for you.

  • The problem here is that normally you'd get a 'Press any key to continue' type message from the device, which is one of the items CatTools is waiting on.

    It appears that your device is responding with some message about registering your product with HP:

    We'd like to keep you up to date about:
      * Software feature updates
      * New product announcements
      * Special events

    Please register your products now at:
    www.ProCurve.com

    The device appears to then wait at this prompt.  If you can disable this message (or maybe register the product to see if it then disappears), then things should hopefully then run as normal and CatTools will be able to login successfully.

    Regards,

    Steve

  • Hi

    It does show the "Press any key to continue" at the end of the text. When I then press "any key" it returns to the CLI console.

    The text showed below is commend for all my HP switch's.

    When I look into the logfile it show Waiting for: "ress any key to continue" and not "Press any key to continue". Is that a bug ?

    regards Christian

  • Hi Christian,

    For the HP script, CatTools will wait for up to 30 seconds for the 'press any key to continue' prompt from the device.   Note: it doesn't matter that the script is looking for 'ress any key to continue'; this will still work just fine - so not a bug :)

  • When I do an telnet to the switch it shows "Press any key to continue" immediately. I does not wait more the 30 secounds

  • Interesting.

    In the last CatTools device capture log you attached, the device DID indeed send the 'Press any key to continue' prompt (it didn't in the original capture).

    However, the capture log is also showing me that CatTools is responding to this by sending a Carriage Return (CR).  You can see this in the following log snippet:

     [24;1HPress any key to continue[27][24;1H[27][?25h[27][24;27H<W-17:15:54>[13]

    The device then continues responding, but there appears to be no authentication prompts (i.e. Username: or Password:) which CatTools is expecting to find.

    Instead it looks like we just reach the device hostname prompt of SW12#

    <R-17:15:54>[27][2J[27][?7l[27][1;24r[27][?6l[27][24;27H[27][1;24r[27][24;1H[27][24;1H[27][2K[27][24;1H[27][?25h[27][24;1H[27][24;1HSW12# [27][24;1H[27][24;7H[27][24;1H[27][?25h[27][24;7H

    Can you try in the 'Passwords' tab of the device set-up un-ticking all of the 3 tick box options at the bottom of the tab, i.e.

        Initial login requires password:

        Initial login requires username/password:

        Enable mode requires username/password:

    Then re-run your activity to see if this now works.

    I am trying to backup configuration on my Dell 6224P switches

  • Hi moadil,

    Could you start a new thwack thread on your Dell issue please as this one relates to HP.

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • Steve:

    This solution fixes the case where the switch has no passwords set. We have a lot of ProCurves (models 2800, 3500, 5400) that CatTools fails to back up.  Even when I remove the Please register text (as described below).

    I'm interested in finding a solution for them.

    Evan

    PS: To get rid of the text about registering the switch, configure as "no banner motd".
