NPM v10 - Orion Database Server (SQL Server support?)

Hello,

We are getting ready to upgrage NPM 9.x to NPM v10 and have a couple of questions.

We are going to move the Orion Database which is running on Microsoft SQL 2000 to a Windows 2008 R2/SQL 2008 Stnd R2 server; do you upgrade the Orion Database to v10 before you move it to the new server?

Does NPM v10 support Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard R2 ?

A few points to consider to direct your next steps:
Orion NPM 10.0 is NOT compatible with SQL Server 2008 R2. It is, however, compatible with SQL Server 2008.
Orion NPM 9.5.1 is only compatible with either SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008.
Orion NPM 9.1 is compatible with either SQL Server 2000 SP4 or SQL Server 2005.
If you are currently at 9.X with SQL Server 2000, you will need to complete the following steps to best maintain the integrity of your database:
Note: These instructions are available, in more detail, with links to required installers, in the Upgrade Instructions document. To access the Upgrade Instructions document, log in to your SolarWinds Customer Portal, click License Management in the Customer Portal menu on the left, and then click Upgrade Instructions in your Orion NPM listing.
Backup your current Orion database.
Upgrade Orion NPM 9.X to Orion NPM 9.1 SP5.
Upgrade SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. For more information, see the SolarWinds Technical Reference "Moving Your Orion NPM Database".
Restore your Orion database backup to SQL Server 2005. For more information, see the SolarWinds Technical Reference "Moving Your Orion NPM Database".
Backup your Orion NPM 9.1 SP5 database. For more information, see the SolarWinds Technical Reference "Moving Your Orion NPM Database".
Upgrade Orion NPM 9.1 SP5 to Orion NPM 9.5.1.
Upgrade SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008. For more information, see the SolarWinds Technical Reference "Moving Your Orion NPM Database".
Restore your Orion database backup to SQL Server 2008. For more information, see the SolarWinds Technical Reference "Moving Your Orion NPM Database".
Backup your Orion NPM 9.5.1 database. For more information, see the SolarWinds Technical Reference "Moving Your Orion NPM Database".
Upgrade Orion NPM 9.5.1 to Orion NPM 10.0.

Andrew,
In regard to Step 3. What if your company did not purchase SQL Server 2005 and chose to go with SQL Server 2008? Is it feasible to upgrade 2000 directly to 2008? We are in the very early stages of planning the upgrade from 9.1 to 10.0 SP1. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

No we do not support SQL 2008 R2 yet, we are adding support for this in the next version.
Regarding SQL 2000 to 2008 upgrade, see this doc from MSFT

This is in the NPM Release Notes as of 8/18/10
"Other Features in this Release
The following features have also been included in this version of Orion NPM:
Windows Server 2008 R2 is now officially supported."
Is this incorrect? Is this SP1? I am getting mixed messages from documenetation and support? Please help.

Hi Jason--
I believe what Brandon is saying here is that we don't support SQL (database) 2008 R2 yet. We do support Windows Server (operating system) 2008 R2.
Support for SQL 2008 R2 is coming in the next version. So the release notes are correct.
