Loving the new community

I just wanted to say that so far I'm loving the new community and I wanted to throw a shout out to Michael Torok ,DanielleH and everyone else that put in all of the hard work to get this up and running.

 

Still getting the hang of a few things but so far so good....great job all!

    Thank you, sir! It means a lot to hear that the community is liking the changes.

      Not really loving it at the moment as it's hard to navigate and the light blue on white isn't very clear. The document for old location to new location shows "Spaces" at the top of the page but that's not on my login. Am I missing something?

        Jason, the "spaces" menu should be at the very top of every page in the main navigation bar, just to the right of the logo.  Are you not seeing this navigation bar at all?

          I am not liking - "dis-like" the new Thwack layout and I ma guessing this is why my 2 questions on Network Capacity planning have not been looked at or questions answered yet. I can't even find where the forums went. I did find them once but now I lost them again. Why do we not just have a FORUM button or tag at the top I don't know what Space mean or what some of the other symbols are. A website should be easily navigated by the enduser and not something we should have to re-learn every time it changes. I am going to guess you may see a drop in web traffic by the looks of the current site.

           

          I will stick with it and figure out the navigation of the site but so far a big "dis-like"

            I will agree with the point about spaces....they are the forums but someone doesn't know that just by looking at the site.  I too found that confusing when first logging in.  I am now following the spaces I usually review so that they pop up in my direct feed. 

             

            Clicking on the thwack community logo shows recent content which are the most recent posts in any forum (just like we had before).  If you want to look directly at a specific "SPACE" you have to navigate to that location to see threads only on that topic (also similar to what we had before).

             

            The only thing I really don't like so far about the experience is that we have lost the easily identifiable Staff logos under people's avatars.  Now you have to hover over and find the badge that represents staff to know if they are an employee or not....I really liked previously knowing "hey that comment was written by staff" compared to Joe Schmoe

            We hear your concerns.  If you take a look at the old to new thwack document, I think you might find some very helpful information.  All forums are located within the "Spaces" tile.  As Mike said above, you can follow any space and your followed activity will show up in your Activity stream.  We understand it can be difficult adapting to change but we are here to help should you get stuck.

             

            Mike Driskell, we had some internal discussion around the badge thing yesterday.  In the short term, I think we might default all employees avatars to the SW flame (or some other SW related icon) so people will know this is an employee commenting.

             

            Community -  we are listening.  As with any release, there will be a few hiccups here and there.  Please bare with us as we work to make this as pain-free as possible.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me and I will address your concerns in a timely manner.

              I hate changing things I like... you never know how it's gonna go; Am I even gonna the new thing as much as I liked the old one (my favorite ____ just got worn in and comfortable!).  It has taken a couple days of getting used to, but I think I like it as much as the old one, and I am still find cool things.

              I getting a spinning wheel for points, levels and badges... is that where the staff stuff should be?  what about our old badges? are the still here?  I'll try a different browser to see if the spinning thing goes away.

          Hi,

          Yes the Spaces option is missing and even after logging in it doesnt show. This is using IE 7.0, I've not tried other browsers as yet.

        The Spaces menu should be seen even without being logged in.  As Sandi shows in her post, it will always be on the very top left corner next to the thwack logo.  Please let us know if you are not seeing this still.

    I did find the stuff under the Spaces, I don't have time to read through or watch an entire tutorial on how to navigate the new site. It should be simple and straight forward not convaluted and confusing.

    Sorta old thread but I wanted to throw in my two cents worth:  the new community is awful.  For somebody who doesn't have time to "get the hang of a few things" I find it very frustrating to navigate.  I started a discussion in Getting Started on how to turn off the annoying thwack update emails and I can't even find my thread now.  If I click 'Forums & Spaces' --> 'Getting Started' it is nowhere to be found.  And I thought the old forum was annoying because you couldn't search a specific sub-forum.  You guys raised the bar to a whole new level.

     

    I suppose if I had hours and hours to spend on here my opinion might be different, but I have work to do and can't in good conscious spend all day on a forum instead of working.

      I'd really like to turn you on to the new community platform.  Could you explain where you found the navigation frustrating?  I'm inquiring because this is something several of our users found as an improvement.  We understand the frustration of having to learn a whole new navigation and layout but if you're interested, I have some tips or tricks that I could share including how to search a specific sub-forum.  If I can help get you to where you need to go, I think you'll find the site much more resourceful and quicker than legacy thwack.

        What's frustrating about the preferences is nowhere does it mention thwack Update emails.  How am I supposed to know that People, places, and content I'm following (Followed Activity) equates to thwack Update emails?

         

        What's frustrating about navigation is the fact I can't even find my discussion I started in Getting Started.  My brain tells me I should be able to click on Forums & Spaces then Getting Started to find my post and see if anybody replied.  Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work that way as I can't seem to locate it.  Can you tell me how to navigate to my post from the main thwack homepage?

          The Getting Started space is specifically for docs and tutorials we have posted to walk users through the site.  There are no discussions in that space.  In Getting Started, there is a short doc on Getting Started: Activity, Communications, and Actions which will explain what these tabs do.  For example, you will receive a notification in your Communications tab after I post this reply because I am replying to you.  You will also receive an email, unless you turn off emails for your Communications:save image

           

          Once you know what these tabs do, you can decide whether you would like to receive notifications via email or not.  If you are looking to get rid of all emails from thwack, you would just turn everything off in your email preferences.

           

          It seems this is just a simple case of posting in the wrong space.  Great to hear that you are utilizing The Forums & Spaces tab.  It is the easiest way to navigate the site.  Your discussion was moved to the thwack Community forum which is where all discussions pertaining to thwack can be posted.  A good area to find your activity on the site is in your profile.  Simply click on your name at the top right of the page and you'll be taken to your profile.  Under the Activity tab is where you will find all of your activity on the site.

            Thanks for the response.  I posted in Getting Started because on the upper left of every page it says Newbie? Get Started >>.  That seemed applicable to me so I clicked the link then clicked on Start a Discussion on the right of the page that loaded.  Seemed like the logical thing to do.  But I guess the Start a Discussion link is for internal use only.

             

            In the big picture I find it frustrating that I have to read documents to learn how the site works.  I think the site should be intuitive enough that the average internet savvy person can navigate their way around and understand how things work without having to read a tutorial.  Perhaps I've been around too long and don't adapt to change like I used to since my first forum experience was a local dial-up bulletin board system I hosted in the early 90's.

             

            At any rate, thanks for the help.  As time permits I'll come back to hone my navigation skills so when I do need to research a problem I'll have a better idea how the site is laid out and will hopefully find a resolution quicker.

              I can see how that could be confusing.  Posting in the wrong forum happens fairly often.  I might move the post so the community can actually view the discussion or question, but we will never delete it.  The biggest tip I could give you is to use the search bar.  It's a very intelligent search and when all else fails, it can usually find what you're looking for.

              BTW, I would also check out the Browse menu on the far right.

              You can filter the Browse menu by type of content and content that is specific to you (e.g. your authored discussions, your followed discussions, etc.).
