SNMP Enabler not working

jnelson

This seems to be a common problem in these forums...

I have done everything possible, both from the help file and these forums to get SNMP Enabler working. The installations always fail, or SNMP Enabler locks up/crashes. I cannot express how very little i want to have to go hands-on all the machines in my network.

The setup is thus: The install files are on a network share drive that maps out on login. PSEXEC is in the same share. 95% of the computers in my network map this drive. Using PSEXEC, i get an "unexpected error" on every machine that does not have SNMP already. For those, it succeeds in configuration.

If i use WMI, the installation starts, but fails. Logs from individual computers suggest that SNMP was indeed installed, but cannot start or be configured. Is this a known problem?

I am very sorry to see you are having troubles with the tool. Can you provide log from the application and tell us on what operating systems you are trying to install SNMP? You can PM me with that information.

      Please see attached.

there should be the full log file in documents and settings\all users\application data\solarwinds\snmp enabler. Can you send it to me? I will consult it with our developers tomorrow.

        Thanks,

        Michal

        jnelson,

From looking at your log it looks like the account you are using may not have admin rights on the target machines. Can you verify that the domain account you are using in the tool has admin rights to the target machines?

There're only two or three machines that these credentials are not valid for (out of domain). I'm using the domain administrators credentials.

PM wasn't working, heres the log file. FYI, Remote Registry wasn't enabled until about a week ago.

              Hi jnelson--

I PMed you and it worked fine. If you could try PM again and PM me back, that would be great. If you cannot, post back here so I can look into it.

jnelson, did you try to run SNMP Enabler with elevated rights (as administrator)?

jnelson, I checked with our developers and it sounds like an issue we have already seen: the psexec was located on a network drive. If it is your case, please copy the psexec to the machine where SNMP Enabler is installed. Let me know if that helped.

Yes, that was the very first thing i did (one gets used to that in Windows 7).

The PSexec is located on a network drive, is it not? If so, please copy it to the local drive on the machine where SNMP Enabler is installed or reference it using full UNC path (\\server\folder\psexec.exe)

                  jnelson,

Your logs show that the path to your PSExec app is: V:\Information Systems\SysinternalsSuite\PsExec.exe
That is a mapped drive and mapped drives not working in this case is a known issue. Try accessing it as a share: \\server\folder\psexec.exe
                  --HTH

                  jnelson,

Your logs show that the path to your PSExec app is a mapped drive. Not being able to access PSExec via a mapped drive from within SNMP Enabler is a known issue. You can change that access to a network share path and it should work fine.

I verified that this known issue did not make it into the documentation and am going to tag that to be added.
                  --HTH

Steve/Michael, thanks for the replies. If PSEXEC needs a UNC, do the install files need to be the same way, or can they use a mapped drive?

                    jnelson

PSExec run from local seems to initiate more installs, but they still fail. I'm going to try a UNC path, but the program has crashed on me once today already.

As long as your earmarking stuff for the devs, can you request that a results filter for Installation Success and SNMP Config Success be added? I dont have a very big environment, and chasing down everything is quite the chore, i cant imagine what someone with thousands of machines must go through.

To that end, maybe add in a config filel that each session saves so it can pick up where it left off, so it doesnt take as long or run so many threads?

I'll get back and update you all as i can,

Alright, just finished running SNMP Enabler again with PSEXEC set as a UNC. All failed. This time i only ran the tool on the same subnet that i'm on. This shouldnt have made a difference, but i decided to give it a shot anyway.

                      Any ideas at this point?

we are sure the psexec has to be targeted via UNC or on a local drive. This should have solved at least something. Could you perhaps PM me or post the latest log?

                      • Re: SNMP Enabler not working
                        jnelson

Aright, so, it would seem that if you use UNCs for Psexec AND the install files, things seem to work as one would expect. I'm still seeing a few failures, but i'm willing to chalk it up to the node just not being configured properly.

So, in my configuration, i'm running Windows 7, elevating SNMP Enabler with admin rights, using the domain admins credentials in the program, and for both PSEXEC and the install files using full UNCs. the successful run was done on the same subnet as the majority of my targets (in this case, 192.168.11.0/24). Im going to try both subnets (192.168.10.0/23) next, to verify that works. If it does NOT, I will report back here. Otherwise, i will close this thread.

Thank you for all of your help.
